UN Peacebuilding Fund Donors Visit Yei River County

Yei River County, South Sudan — A high-level delegation representing donors to the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund has visited Yei River County this week to assess ongoing efforts to strengthen peace and reconciliation in the region.

The delegation, accompanied by officials from South Sudan’s National Ministry of Peacebuilding, met with Yei River County Commissioner Hon. Emmanuel Taban Seme and engaged directly with local stakeholders, including community leaders, women’s groups, and youth organizations.

Their mission was clear: to monitor how peacebuilding projects funded through the UN’s Multi-Partner Trust Fund (RSRTF) are making a difference in a county that has long stood at the frontline of South Sudan’s search for lasting peace.

“We want to hear from the people themselves—government officials, youth, women’s groups, and community leaders—how these projects are truly impacting lives and fostering peace,” said Muhammad Almasri, Monitoring and Reporting Officer for the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund.

The visit reflects the Fund’s ongoing commitment to people-centered peacebuilding, ensuring that international efforts align with the realities on the ground.

Mr. Deng John Dkuei, Senior Inspector for Peace Monitoring at the Ministry of Peacebuilding, emphasized the importance of such assessments:

“These visits help us understand what’s working, what challenges remain, and how we can better support communities to achieve their peace goals.”

Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme praised the RSRTF-supported initiatives, noting that they have contributed meaningfully to reducing tensions, fostering reconciliation, and addressing root causes of smaller local conflicts in Yei.

“These projects are not just about peace in theory—they are about reconciliation in practice, and they are helping our people move forward,” the Commissioner said.

Yei River County has often been seen as a microcosm of South Sudan’s wider challenges: ethnic divisions, resource-based conflicts, and the legacy of civil war. Yet it also symbolizes the hope for healing and the crucial role of grassroots efforts in sustaining peace.

By supporting projects in Yei, the UN and its partners are not just investing in one community—they are helping build a model for locally-driven peace across South Sudan and beyond.
