The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people was celebrated on Wednesday November 29 at the UNECA compound in the presence of high government officials, representative of UN, AU, Arab council and ambassadors of various nations. During his opening speech Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Ethiopia and permanent observer to African Union, Fares Alqub stated that the day commemorated the atrocities committed by the Zionist Israeli on the people of Palestine.
Ambassador Alqub said, “This year, we commemorate the international day of solidarity with the Palestinian people under catastrophic circumstances in which our Palestinian people are suffering each day from practices of the Zionist Israeli occupation 54 days ago. The Israeli forces started unlawful brutal aggression derived by blind vengeance and hatred towards our Palestinian people living in Gaza strip. The Israeli forces have targeted tens of thousands of civilians”
The Ambassador continued to say that this brutal occupation is committing the most horrific massacre and genocidal war against the defenseless Palestinians in front of the world under a live broadcast and a blatant defiance of the holy human law and morals. He said Israel’s actions are a direct defiance of the resolutions of the UN Security Council.
The United Nations Resident Coordinator Dr. Ranez Alakbarov stated that the UN is committed to bring about a lasting solution in the region. On the occasion Dr Alakbarov said, “The United Nations will not waver in its commitment to the Palestinian people today and every day. Let us stand in solidarity with the aspirations of the Palestinian people to achieve their undeniable right and build the future of peace, justice, security and dignity for all.”
Eshetu Tilahun Chief of the Cabinet of Foreign Affairs reiterated Ethiopia’s historic solidarity with the people of Palestine. He said, “It has been nearly five decades since the annual observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the people of Palestine was established by the UN general assembly resolution in 1977. The resolution reaffirmed that a just and lasting peace in the middle east cannot be realized without the achievement of a just resolution to the problem of Palestine, that is on the bases of the attainment of the inalienable rights of the people of Palestine.” He continues to say Ethiopia continues to support and promote a principled and realistic peace plan with two states existing side by side in peace and mutual security. He further reminded the international community not to lose hope in their concerted efforts to bring about a lasting peace for the people of Palestine.
Ambassador Alqub on the occasion appreciated that Palestine has observed the solidarity of nations that have stood by the side of Palestine people during this time of aggression and that his government and people appreciate this solidarity.
“Allow me on behalf of Palestinian people, government and on my behalf to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude for your governmental and all true free people around the world who believe in our just and historic cause, solidarity connects all people around the world specially during difficult time it has made us stronger. Your unwavering support and with it we believe that the Israeli colonial occupation will not last forever. We Palestinian hope that we will be able to live like every other human being.”
