In a significant diplomatic gesture, His Excellency João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola, hosted His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, along with his delegation, at the State House in Luanda earlier today. The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the ongoing US-Africa Business Summit, underscored the deepening collaboration between Angola and the AU on critical regional and continental matters.
During the meeting, Chairperson Youssouf briefed President Lourenço on a range of pressing issues affecting the African continent. These included ongoing conflicts in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Sudan, South Sudan, the Sahel region, and Somalia. The Chairperson also provided an update on the African Union’s efforts to mobilize sustainable funding for African-led peace support operations aimed at restoring stability and peace across the continent.
In response, President Lourenço praised the leadership and dedication demonstrated by Chairperson Youssouf in advancing peace, security, and regional integration. He expressed strong support for continued diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflicts that have plagued the continent, while also emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus on the African Union's Agenda 2063, which envisions a peaceful, integrated, and prosperous Africa.
President Lourenço reiterated Angola's commitment to supporting the African Union’s peace and security agenda, highlighting the need for collective action and stronger partnerships to address the continent's challenges.
This high-level engagement further underscores Angola's active role in shaping the future of the African continent, particularly in the areas of peace, security, and regional cooperation.
