The Ethiopian Health Insurance Agency has organized
an awareness raising workshop on Community Based Health Insurance for
journalists today in Adama Town. The workshop is planned to create awareness
among journalists who are expected to reach the wider population. While opening
the workshop Director General of the Ethiopian Health Insurance Agency, W/r
Ferehiwot Abebe noted that though the agency has registered an encouraging
result by reaching out to the grass root community, the efforts will not reach
the expected out come without the partnership of media households.
The health
insurance scheme which started ten years ago with in just 13 woredas has now
spread to 743 woredas around the country and has benefited over 6.9 million
households. The study presented at the workshop indicates that though these are
encouraging results they are nowhere near the expected result of covering 80%
of the population in two years’ time.
The health
insurance is said to cover medical expenses from minor illnesses to heavy surgeries
that can be conducted in the country and is also said to cover three months of
Kidney Dialysis which has recently become a major problem in the country.
