The African Initiative for Journalism and Media (AfroMedia) has condemned what it calls a “systematic war” on journalists in Gaza, urging the United Nations to take urgent action to protect press freedom.
In its press release, AfroMedia stated that since October 2023, more than 240 journalists and media professionals have been killed in the besieged Strip, according to reports by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). Dozens more have been injured or detained, making Gaza the most dangerous place in the world for journalism today.
AfroMedia says the targeting of journalists such as Anas Al-Sharif, Hossam Shabat, Ismail Abu Hatab, and Yahya Sobeih is part of an effort to “silence the truth” and hide alleged crimes against civilians. The initiative calls this a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions and a “full-fledged war crime” requiring immediate accountability.
The initiative has called on the UN to issue a formal condemnation, launch an international investigation, and grant independent media access to Gaza to ensure balanced reporting. AfroMedia also urges protective measures for journalists, such as safety equipment and logistical support.
“This is not just a human loss, it is a direct assault on press freedom, transparency, and the world’s right to know,” the statement reads. “Defending journalists means defending truth and justice for future generations.”
