Africa Determined to Keep Its Mineral Wealth at Home

By African View Reporter

Africa has taken another significant step toward ensuring its vast mineral wealth benefits its own people, following a landmark agreement signed at the African Natural Resources and Energy Summit 2026.

The agreement, signed between the Africans for Africa Initiative and Steron International Resources, seeks to accelerate African-led mineral development while promoting local value addition and sustainable mining practices.

For decades, Africa has exported raw minerals, including lithium, cobalt, manganese, and rare earth elements, only to import higher-value manufactured products made from those same resources. The new partnership aims to help reverse that trend by encouraging more processing, manufacturing, and industrial development within the continent.

Supporters say the initiative aligns with the vision of the African Union and the African Continental Free Trade Area, which seek to build regional value chains, create skilled jobs, and strengthen Africa's industrial base.

As global demand for critical minerals continues to surge, driven by electric vehicles, renewable energy technologies, and advanced electronics, the agreement comes at a pivotal moment for Africa.

If successfully implemented, the partnership could help ensure that the continent earns more than royalties from its natural resources, creating opportunities for local industries, innovation, and long-term economic growth.

For many African leaders, the message is becoming increasingly clear: the future is not simply about mining more minerals, it is about keeping more of their value in Africa.
