In its biweekly press conference, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Ambassador Meles Alem announced that Addis Ababa has been selected to serve as the headquarters of The Global Black Heritage, History and Education Centre (GBHHC). Ambassador Meless said the Center will be officially launched on December 8, 2023 in the presence of high-level officials, researchers and members of the international black community.
Ambassador Meles Alem said that the center's decision to open its headquarters in Ethiopia is made after a long discussion with the international community. He said the decision is attributed to various issues among which Ethiopia being; the origin of mankind, its rich ancient civilization and the number of UNESCO recognized world heritages, the fact that it was never colonized, played an instrumental role in the freedom struggle of colonized nations, the founding member of several international organizations, can be sighted as some of the reasons for the international black community to turn its head towards the capital Addis Ababa.
Ambassador Meles said the establishment of the center in the capital would have an economic and social benefit to the nation. He also stated the plan to establish a digital museum where black history and heritage will be recorded and will serve as a center for promoting black history and heritage in addition to the wide number of researches it would provoke.
